Babilon-Mobile optimized A2P traffic monetization and eliminated spam with the help of EW SMS Firewall
13 august 2025

The previous anti-fraud solution limited the operator’s ability to profit from A2P SMS termination and effectively block spam. Babilon-Mobile decided to switch platforms, ultimately choosing EW SMS Firewall. Eastwind’s solution helped the company streamline and scale the monetization of A2P SMS traffic.

Before implementing EW SMS Firewall, Babilon-Mobile was using a different system to combat SMS fraud. Over time, however, it no longer met the company’s evolving needs.
What was wrong with the previous solution:
The telecom operator needed a solution that would give full visibility into SMS traffic and allow for flexible rule management. Out of four vendors competing in the tender, Babilon-Mobile chose EW SMS Firewall.
Message filters played a key role in bringing commercial SMS traffic under control. EW SMS Firewall allows for analysis of messages using over 20 parameters, including:
Thanks to this comprehensive message filtering, the telecom operator was able to establish a structured approach to monetizing commercial messaging:
As a result, all previously “gray” A2P traffic is legalized and turned into revenue.

Before implementing the anti-fraud solution, the mobile operator was losing revenue and couldn’t even accurately calculate the losses. With EW SMS Firewall, they were able to identify and prevent them.
The previous anti-fraud solution allowed fraudulent messages to slip through. As a result, subscribers frequently received SMS urging them to call high-cost numbers—either international destinations or premium-rate content provider numbers. These calls led to significant charges being deducted from their balances, causing frustration and complaints. EW SMS Firewall put an end to spam, boosting customer satisfaction with the operator’s services.
Additionally, the solution included a heuristic analysis module installed on the client’s system. This module detects and blocks spam without relying on preconfigured rules.

Thanks to the heuristic analysis module, the amount of spam has been reduced to nearly zero.
Babilon-Mobile first partnered with Eastwind over 15 years ago, and this new project further strengthened their long-standing business relationship. The installation was completed on schedule—taking 10 months from the initial project agreement to full deployment.

Why the Client Chose to Replace Their Anti-Fraud Solution
Before implementing EW SMS Firewall, Babilon-Mobile was using a different system to combat SMS fraud. Over time, however, it no longer met the company’s evolving needs.
What was wrong with the previous solution:
- Limited reporting failed to provide a comprehensive view of SMS traffic
- The system didn’t support customizable filtering rules, making it impossible to adapt to the constantly evolving tactics of fraudsters
The telecom operator needed a solution that would give full visibility into SMS traffic and allow for flexible rule management. Out of four vendors competing in the tender, Babilon-Mobile chose EW SMS Firewall.
How the Telecom Operator Optimized A2P Traffic Monetization
Message filters played a key role in bringing commercial SMS traffic under control. EW SMS Firewall allows for analysis of messages using over 20 parameters, including:
- Sender identifiers for P2P messages: IMSI, MSISDN
- Sender identifiers for A2P messages: Alphanumeric Sender IDs, short codes
- Message content: keywords, phrases, and patterns, with consideration for SMS syntax, semantics, and sender type
Thanks to this comprehensive message filtering, the telecom operator was able to establish a structured approach to monetizing commercial messaging:
- EW SMS Firewall blocks A2P messages from SMS providers that don’t have contracts in place
- The roaming department uses reports to identify these providers and offer them contracts to terminate traffic through legal routes and pay the applicable rates
As a result, all previously “gray” A2P traffic is legalized and turned into revenue.
